Aside from a couple of classes in high school, I have no training in photography. I use relatively simple cameras (first a Canon A80, then a Canon A700, and now a Canon A720IS), and one of the main reasons that I like Canons is that their proprietary DIGIC chip excels at capturing colors as I see them.
I took photos for years with no thought of selling them; the creative process was more important to me than the outcome, and even though I shared my work with others, I gave no thought to it as a commercial product. After some encouragement from friends, however, I started exhibiting at local arts festivals and received such a positive repsonse to my work that I decided to get serious about selling it.
I believe in a simple and natural approach to photography. The images you see aren't the result of me having a more expensive camera than most people or access to a photo lab; they come from my eye and my ability to frame a shot. I don't use any special lenses or filters on my camera, and I do minimal post-processing on the images.
Typically, the image that you see is exactly as it was when I first shot it; my favorite photos, the ones I consider my best, are nothing more than a memory that I've managed to commit to the semi-permanence of pixels or paper. |
